Six Steps To Superior Salads

"Be kind to your salads" That's the message from the home economists of Mrs. Cubbison's Foods, makers of Restaurant Style Croutons. They suggest six ideas to make salad-making simpler, healthier and more tasty.

1. Never soak wooden salad bowls in water. After using, rinse quickly with warm water, then with cold. Wipe dry.

2. Don't discard dark green outer leaves of lettuce. They may be tough but they are especially rich in vitamins and minerals Wash, dry, cut with kitchen scissors right into salad bowl.

3. Get a tasting habit. When making dressing, taste, season taste again! A sure way to find out what's missing.

4. Juicy ripe tomatoes can thin a salad dressing. So add these at the last minute.

5. How to store lettuce: Rinse under running water, drain well or spin dry, wrap in foil or other moisture proof wrap; refrigerate.

6. Use croutons (Mrs. Cubbison's makes five tasty varieties or Restaurant Style Croutons: Seasoned, Onion & Garlic, Cheese & Garlic, Ranch, Caesar Salad) to lift salads above the ordinary. Toss greens and other ingredients first, then add croutons just before dishing up salad to fully enjoy that marvelous slow-baked, crispy flavor.
